Outsourcing

This kind of stuff is part of why I got out of technology this last year.

I'm sick of working for corporations, and I'm sick of never knowing if I'll have work tomorrow no matter how good I am.

Making a windfall one month doesn't mean much when you go six after it with no work.

I had no idea the tech sector was so bleak these days! Good luck!

I went back to school to get my teaching degree and it was the greatest decision I ever made. I took out loans worked a junk job on the overnight and my wife supported our family with her salary. It was lean times but the pay off was worth it.

Yea, it pretty well stinks - I've only got 2-6 months left at my job before I am outsourced as well and there are not many prospects out there... :( Good luck, die_kluge! :D

An Idea

You have my sympathy. Thats part of the reason I've stayed where I am. I can't tell you how many people, over the last couple of years, have told me to get out of the military and get a civilian job where I would make at least 3x as much money. I'll take the job security I have over the pay any day.

If I may make a suggestion. There is a little known company out there, that is really huge in the government sector. It's called SAIC. It's a very stable company that does alot of work for the government. Plus you don't have to worry about outsourcing. They have alot of contracts in the states, plus if you want, they have government contracts in other countries. Great way to see the world without joining the military. I know one guy that took a position in Afganistan for a year. Not for me personally, but he's earning 100k a year tax free. I don't know if it's a desireable option for you. But it's an option anyway.

Yeah, Pogre, it's about that bleak. Fortunately, I'm good at math, so a-teaching I will go.

yep, i'm doing the same thing.

i was talking to the Math Education advisor at my college the other day and she says she literally gets three or four calls a day from high schools seeking new math teachers. there's several school districts in my area that are set to open either this week or next that still have four or five open reqs for math teachers they just can't fill. the advisor has said she's even gotten calls from school districts from as far away as North Carolina! (we're in New Jersey)

although i'll probably end up making less than 1/2 what i made in the tech industry, i'll take the job security over more money. and at the end of the day, i think i'll feel better about myself knowing i spent it helping prepare children for the future rather than lining some corporate bigwig's pockets.

Ultimately, the only jobs that have any security are in the direct services sector (that is, jobs that do services directly for people)... that's education, medicine, retail, that kind of thing.

Anything else can be exported for cheap.

Most of those jobs pay really lousy. Those that don't (doctors, lawyers) usually have lots of other problems.

Ashy & Die_Kluge,

Sorry to hear about your situation. It's never easy, and you can expect to be feel scared, frustrated, angry, and depressed. How you choose to react to those feelings is still up to you.

I've just recently completed a job search, after my position along with many others, were eliminated from a bank. I had the good fortune of working with an outplacement firm (Lee, Hecht, Harrison) whose program I found to be very helpful. If you'd like any insights from that program, or just a person to bounce ideas/resume off of for feedback, feel free to contact me directly on email.

Either way, good luck on your search(es)!

In just the past hour I've learned that I've been laid off. Even though rumours had been circulating of (more) reductions in the work force I really thought I would be safe.

I've been worried about the long term stability of the job since my company relies heavily on state revenues (which have been in the red for a while). I wasn't going to feel completely safe about the job until the states were back in the black again.

The last time I was laid off (15 years ago) I had no concerns at all. Played games for 8 weeks until my severance package ran out and then went out and found a job. This time around, with two children, I'll admit the stress is quite a bit higher.

On the plus side, my wife who has been staying home with the kids has just as good (or poor, if you decide be to pessimistic) a chance of finding a job quickly as I do.

I'm off to send e-mails to all my contacts letting them know I'm looking for a job.

later,
Ysgarran.
