Painting Wizard's Workshop DVDs & Videos - What are your thoughts on them?

Hi guys,

I started a similar thread on the WOTC boards but thought that I would also post it here to get the point of view from a slightly different demographic.

I am thinking of buying the 2 Painting Wizard's Workshop DVD's. (also available on video) Before I go out and spend my hard-earned cash though I wanted to see what everyone else thought of them. Has anyone else bought them? Are they worth the money? Is it easy to follow? Too basic or too advanced? Are they better or easier to learn from than a book?

Anyone feedback about them, good or bad, would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Olaf the Stout

I bought them for a friend of mine and he enjoyed them. If you're new to painting, they will show you some essential skills.

If you're skiled at drybrushing, inking, shading, and glazes, them the second one might act as more inspiration than anything else.

I would strongly suggest getting an experienced painter--ask around at your game shop...to help you. The videos are okay as a jumping off point but if you have any experience at all they aren't really all that helpful. I've taught a painting class to some of my players...and you learn a lot more from experience and each other...

I thought they were a pretty good starting point.

They cover all of the basics of the white primer, base color, wash, and dry-brush painthing style. They also cover techniques for painting armies and I think some basic modding info.

I thought they were worth-while, but a bit campy in their presentation.

Since then I have moved onto the black primer and dark-medium-light color style of painting, which I greatly prefer... (here's a link to a decent guide).
