Pathfinder 1E Paizo Map Packs

Hi,

Are these any good? The City one that' s just about to come out looks like it could be very useful. How do they compare to the various other tiles on the market?

Cheers

I actually like the quality of the maps better than the WOTC tiles, however the card stock isn't nearly as think as the WOTC tiles. Either way I find them worth getting. Plus I also like buying card stock and printing out Fat Dragon Games, Oone, and other pdf company map/tile products.

I mostly print my own as well, but I am looking into getting the Paizo packs, scanning them and then resuing them with my own tweaks from Photoshop.

I haven't seen any WOTC tiles in real life yet, but I have most ALL the tiles from Skeleton Key games, and some of the Fat Dragon tiles.

The (Paizo) ones I have are good, from an artwork point of view.

They are also all the same size (unlike, for example, WotC Dungeon Tiles). This might be a plus or a minus, depending on your taste.

They are very thin, and they are also a bit "busy". I prefer my tiles with less detail, so you can fit them together in more combinations. However, if you are happy to fit them together in the "preferred" way, they are awesome.

Personally, I'm looking forward to the campsite one. Its the perfect answer to the usual question "Do we rest up ok?"

"Um, hang on a minute while I get out my campsite tiles ...."

EDIT I also find the only way to get them is to order them from the USA. WotC tiles, on the other hand (apart from the mythical Dungeon Tiles 2) can be picked up from my FLGS.

If you are new to the whole thing, (and have a limited budget :) ), I suggest downloading the *free* Dungeon Tiles Mapper from the WotC website

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20061121t

and the *free* e-adventure tiles annual from Skeleton Key (available as a PDF from RPGnow.com).

It might be that one or the other suits you so well you don't need Paizo.

Personally, the WotC ones are currently my tile of choice.

This is a perfect example of why I follow threads about certain topics. I have found so many things to add to my RPG bookmark file that I am thinking of breaking it down into separate categories/groupings to make my bookmarks easier to use.

Thanks Amethal, I had no idea those were available.

I kind of like them. I've used the inn of the village set in Shadows of the Last War. That didn't go too well since I couldn't figure out the preferred way. It looked weird (and I felt stoopid). On the other hand I used the market tiles for the Bloody Market in the same adventure and that was terrific. Mostly because they're outdoors and you can arrange them in just about anyway you like. -And the combat had chase elements to it.

I don't find them too cluttered. I like the detail - what I don't like is when my players ignore the details and treat the tiles as just a grid. "Ah come on, you can't go there, there is a stand full of apples there!" :)

It's kind of sad when you place them on the table and the combat becomes a sluggfest; if that happens you are better off without minis altogether.

The quality is nice. For sure they are thin but I keep mine in a rucksack unprotected and after three trips to and from the club they are still pristine.

That makes two of us then. I get my wife to arrange all my Paizo tiles for me. She does it effortlessly :o .

Good point. I didn't mean to imply they are not durable. Its just that the thicker WotC tiles have (to me, at least) a more pleasing tactile quality to them.

I really like one hook from Grove of the Mad Druid (technically part of the Compleat Encounters line, but with the map tiles the map packs have). Each tile can be flipped over to show a "hidden" feature of that area of the grove (hidden pit, interior of building, etc).

Thanks for the kind words on the GameMastery Map Packs, folks. I wanted to take a minute from my vacation to add a couple of points to the discussion.

1) Starting with Map Pack: City, the cardstock is a bit thicker. This has not affected the price.

2) GameMastery Map Packs are carried by all major hobby distributors, and your FLGS can order them if they do not already stock them. Failing that, you can always find them on paizo.com.

Thanks!
