I actually have a great fondess for the first four of those novels, they were my first real exposure to D&D, other than maybe the cartoon. I loved "Choose-Your-Own-Adventure" Books, and really loved Dungeon of Dread and Pillars of Pentegarn.

Anyone who was above the age of 8 and/or actually playing D&D before that may have different ideas.

Rose Estes stands out for me as the only female author I've read whose gender seems to matter when writing her male characters (usually it's male writers having the converse problem, writing female caricatures). Mika the Wolf Nomad thought and behaved in a rather effeminate way at times, I thought. And that stuff with the harpy got real weird.

Although, I was a bit older than 8, some of my first exposure to D&D was through the Endless Quest books. I still have fond memories of them. Were they good? Don't know, don't care.

I'll second that. :) I was also around 8 at the time they came out in '82, and have fond memories of those books as well. Dungeons of Dread and Return to Brookmere were my personal favorites.

I'm trying to remember whether I read the first two or three Rose Estes Greyhawk novels. What I remember is that I liked them at the time.

I also loved the Endless Quest books, particularly Circus of Dread.

The sad thing is, those novels were probably the first Greyhawk books I ever encountered!
They were mine too.

I still can't see what everyone gets so excited about with Greyhawk, and those novels are probably at least partially to blame.

If you simply pretend that those books were never written and go solely off the Gord the Rogue series by Gygax, the Greyhawk novels were incredibly awesome. The first two novels were published by TSR, and the remaining ones were published under license after Gygax left the company. I think there were about eight of them in all.
