I'm so excited about Pathfinder that I downloaded it seven times! To different computers, and in a fit of confusion, to the same computer three times. :D

I'll be getting the alpha in PDF format, mining it for ideas to improve my own private SRD. :D

what's the rationale for purchasing a product that's going to be replaced with a newer version in one year (especially when the PDF is free)?

Because 25 dollars (or about 17 on Amazon) is VERY little for a 400+ page printout of the rules you'd use for the next year. About 2 dollars a month is money well spent, if you ask me. Or about 16 full-colour pages for every dollar. Hard to get better value for your money. :D

For me, its about having the complete set. Like Blue Box D&D gamer is still proud to say that he has all his old material, same thing for me, but I'm a ground floor Pathfinder gamer. "Been here since the beginning kids. Look at this old copy. Its the beta version of the 1st edition the game you're now playing. I'm just glad that 2E and 3E Pathfinder stayed true to their roots while being modernized. Mind you that was before Paizo bought Wizards of the Coast in 2027 and merged 12E D&D with what would have been 4E Pathfinder to reunite the base."

I can understand that, but to a large degree, doesn't the PDF sort of fulfill that desire? I know it's not quite the same, but for me it goes a long way towards sating the desire to have it for the sake of completeness. The same could be said for using it for running Pathfinder games between now and August '09, I suppose, too.

I'm very excited about Pathfinder, and I can't wait to see the Beta. I just don't know if it's worthwhile to pick up the print version.

I'm proud to support this alternate new edition of D&D. I have two copies of the beta on pre-order and I plan to start a nice long running Pathfinder game in early September. The modifications to the rules are very well done, streamlining problem mechanics, fixing class balance issues, converting save or die effects into damage, all while staying very compatible with 3.5 rules. Well done Paizo! I can't wait to see the beta.
