Paladin as a prestige class, where can I find this?

Babylon Knight

First Post
Something my players want, similar in vein to the character "Cecil" from the Final Fantasy game series, who was once a dark knight akin to a blackguard or evil fighter, but became a Paladin after a good act.

Can anyone please help me out?

The PrC paladin appears in Unearthed Arcana.

Ah wait a minute, upon inspection...

I was reading the Prestige Class: Paladin progression in Unearthed Arcana, and it requires one to cast Protection from Evil as a Divine spell

now, mechanically this would work fine for a Cleric, since most players favor good anyhow, but it doesn't allow for an evil fighter, or evil blackguard to become it. Hell, if you play an Evil character, why would you need Protection from Evil anyhow? my point being, i wish it were slightly more flexible

basically, it is near impossible for an evil fighter or similar evil combatant to take this Prestige class, a change of heart if you will...can someone else help me here?

Help youself and alter the prestige class to suit your campaign. I do it all the time.

Prestige classes are purely optional and always under the purview of the DM. We encourage you, as the DM, to tightly limit the prestige classes available in your campaign...The best prestige classes for your campaign are the ones you tailor make yourself.

So instead of having Protection from Evil and Turn Dead as abilities, can someone please suggest an equal alternative for requirement that would be suited for non-casters? :)

Why not take the core blackguard and change its abilities around?
Level 1: aura of good, detect evil, smite evil 1/day
Level 2: divine grace, lay on hands
Level 3: turn undead, aura of courage, divine health
Level 4: remove disease 1/week
Level 5: special mount, smite evil 2/day
etc.

Spells per day is unchanged, but use the paladin spell list. Change skill list to paladin skill list.

For prerequisites, maybe Ride 5 ranks and Knowledge (religion) 2 ranks, feats Mounted Combat, Ride-by Attack, Spirited Charge. The prerequisites encourage a mounted combatant, which will enable the character to make better use of his special mount.

Well, considering it is based on the paladin class in the PHB, one would expect to be some goody-two-shoe who hates evil to take such a PrC.

As stated by earlier posters, change it to any of other paladin classes in UA, or go 180 and change the feature to make it a blackguard prestigious class.

Well, evil characters sometimes fight evil NPC's and/or outsides right??

Conflict arises amongst evil and good far more often than evil and evil, by far, so Protection From Good would be of more use.

Yes, i knew someone was going to bring it up, but it's also for the same reasons why other alignments/races don't get bonuses against their own races unless they have a certain agenda
