Paladin variant without a mount?

Dragon #310 has several variant Paladin classes, many of which have alternates to the Special Mount. While these are 20 level classes, I believe that some of the options would balance if taken as a straight one for one substitute with the special mount. One I have thought of using is a celestial animal that can be summoned for 1 hr per day per level. Other include elemental companions, regular animal companions, and I think one even has the Leadership feat as a substitute. Unfortunately this is not an area where I think Unearthed Arcana adds a lot, its variant paladins all seem to have special mounts IIRC.

Don't forget that a mount doesn't always mean a Warhorse. Depending upon what the DM allows, a by-the-book 3.5 Paladin could have as his "mount" something like a Dire Lion to fight alongside of him. Think Drizzt and his panther rather than The Lone Ranger and his horse. ;)

Monte Cook also has some variant Paladins in the Book of Hallowed Might, and the Neutral Good Paladin has a Celestial Ally ability instead of a special mount.
