I have a friend joining are group back after many months/ a year? of missing all the action.

His character was/is Paladin of 3rd level and will be bumped up to 7th level (meeting the lowest character level as this player has died and been raised).
What kind of suggestioned do you have about what other class's he should take or feats only using the splatt books and D.M's guide for prestige classes.
Thanks in advance.

Some people like Knight of the Challace. I personaly think Paladin is a perfectly fine class to stay in.

Don't forget to give him a bit extra gear too, unless he was overequiped for a 3rd level character according to your campaign guidelines.

Unless you are using some house rules (or a very few prestige classes) a paladin can't multiclass. That is if a paladin takes a level in another class he can never take another level of paladin. Prestige classes count for this restriction jsut as muchas do any other class, that is why some of them state that they allow the paladin to freely mutliclass.

Depends on what world they're playing in..... there are a FEW orders of paladins who can freely multiclass in the FR world and the few prestige classes that allow one to do so.

That just means you have to take all the levels in Paladin that you want, and then multiclass. Or, if you're playing Eberron, you can take Knight Training, right?

We are playing 3.0 (I know we are buying the books slowly) and it's a home grow campaign.
I did not know that Paladins can't multiclass after they start multiclassing.
Is that under the multiclass rules?
Plus thanks for the replies on what to do.

I should say so under the class description for Paladins. Same location it would mention the caveats for a bard becoming lawful, or a monk becoming not lawful. Somewhere near the end of the class description, I think.

Personaly, we've ruled in our campaign that if it fits the concept, we'll allow it. Basicly, we tend to rule concept/fun trumps restrictive rules most of the time (usually doesn't flow over more than once).

My favorite breaking concept was a character who was a paladin/monk. Cool concept, rped itself well, and it realy isn't overpowering, so I let him bounce back and forth.

As always I felt paladin restrictions were a little...off. It should depend on the deity but then there are others that say otherwise.

If its a Homebrew, your DM can rule it as he sees fit.

My advice though, if it is a 3.0 game, take LOTS of extra smiting. 3.5 paladin (other than my issue of poke-paladin) is much improved and better rounded class.
