Paragon Path question.

After taking your paragon path, do you have to use the powers from said path list or could you use a power from the base class instead.

For example say a warlock Paragon's to become a Hexer. Does the warlock have to use only those powers from the Hexer power list, or could he/she pick a power from the Warlock list, after leveling up?

I've read the player's handbook cover to cover but either I can't find anything or I'm just not understanding it right.

For every other power you learn you can choose a lower level power of the same type instead, but apparently not for Paragon powers. I don't think it would hurt the game to allow it, but since these powers are most of what there is to a paragon path, if you don't like them you should probably choose a different path.

The thing is, a paragon path is not 'just the powers.' Some have fantastic features and powers that are sub-par, and others go the other way.

If you're a rogue, the daggermaster powers are meh. But the features are so good you don't care. It wouldn't be balanced to just trade out your powers to get better ones, while keeping the feature that you took the path for.

It's all in with paragon paths, and they are designed around that.

If you want to 'choose your powers' paragon path, either go human or half-elf and take the human racial paragon path, or paragon multiclass. Both are viable options.

Otherwise, the cost of specializing is that you're specializing.

Of course, taking a Paragon Path with good features and swapping out a weak power is a classic Charop tactic. You can do this for the level 11 encounter power by using the "Reserve Maneuver" feat.

I don't think many Daggermasters are there for the powers... If I had to guess, I would say that most PPs are chosen for the sake of the features. For example, I know of an Avenger who definitely took Favored Soul for the wings and fly speed.

I knew this would come up in this topic, so allow me to sidetrack a little and ask:

IIRC, Reserve Maneuver allows you to "swap out" a class power. Is my recollection wrong, or is there some other piece of rules text that specifies that PP powers are class powers?

Unless you're a Str cleric, in which case you - *grumble grumble**

Benefit: Choose an encounter attack power from your class. The power must be your level or lower and one that you don’t already have. When you regain the use of your powers at the end of any rest, you can gain the use of the chosen power instead of regaining the use of an encounter attack power of the same level or higher.

So you pick a Class Attack Power. When you regain your powers, instead of regaining the PP power (which is just any old power and the feat doesn't require it be a class power) you can regain the class power instead. Note all the text regarding the power you're replacing is generic, can be anything, only the power you get has restricting text.
