"If you take a PP, you take it warts and all"
and why is that, exactly? because the designers can't err in power design? because we are all sinners and should be punished for following our character concept? A PP is not a punishment. It should make you more powerful, period. A power you will never, or can never use, because you multi-classed is not balanced, it's cruft....
e.g. I multi'ed my ranger+warlord into avenger, not for the crits (although that's nice), but for the level 16 fly-speed since the lackluster Scion of Arkhosia doesn't do anything worthwhile in that dept. I fly around with my level 5 pathfinder cleric, and we just had the most epic battle today....why do I mention this? Because I like my fantasy characters to fly. Especially the dragon-man ones, who grow wings. Except in D&D 4th ed, a dragonborn with wings cannot fly and use his breath weapon. He can barely even look around and scratch his nose lest he crash. And taking the epic destiny to improve it, doesn't, because it doesn't have the PP as a prerequisite. So others can take, you know, actually worthwhile PPs if they can wait another year or two as penance to the almighty "balance gods".
Why should we all not have a working level 11 encounter power? If it takes an extra feat to swap it out, what is wrong with that? Taking an extra feat to swap out this useless power that I would never use, even once, is a good thing, and not power gaming at all.
Why was Reserve Maneuver was invented? It's one of the few things I've found that Wizards has done right. A paragon-level feat is worth a lot, you know....I didn't spend two years playing this game to get to paragon just to be forced into a PP because it was my intention all along for my dragon man to fix his broken wings, and learn to fly again (dum de dum), until I learned deeper about how sucky overland flight rules are.
The inability to fly in plate, ok, fine, that makes sense regardless (but if it makes sense for Avengers why not for Scions? explain that one. a Scion can literally fly around all day in full plate and shield and not land. realistic, much?). He just can't sneeze in the air or he will fall to his death. Also, the wings won't help him if he's knocked over a cliff, any more than a brick.
/aside I found this link from google, where I was looking for ways to swap out my honking slog of a level 11 thingy in Favored Soul...thanks! I will take Reserve Maneuver at level 14, and use it to its fullest extent. I'd much rather have another encounter power than a feat, or more damage, although there are tradeoffs which will cost me.
IMO : a PP is not a punishment, it should make you stronger. Warts belong on trolls, not on our character sheets (unless we want them there!)
