I'm doubtful it would have made any difference if all the people who knew about the OGL fiasco and cared enough to boycott the movie had instead seen the movies and promoted it through word of mouth. Given the conditions at the time, if they took the same story, and stretched it out into a streaming TV series, it likely would have done much better.
