well you are the rare case then. How did they manage to skirt the main room?

Er... they can start by not charging into a room full of carousing giants ?

How about using the door from which there is no sound of tens of partying giants ? ;)

You don't need to be a ninja to think of that. :D

common sense and recon elludes 80% of the parties that venture into the G series...

After my group got their butt kicked in the first encounter they went to recon and stealth. They'd listen at doors and if it sounded like a lot of giants they would silently block the door to hinder reinfocrements. It was a lot of fun, they felt they were in way over their head and came up with some great ideas.

You know, with improved invisibility, haste, and area-effect spells, a 10th-level party CAN kill all the giants with surprising ease, even in the banquet-hall battle. I have seen this happen with my 2e group, which had substantially less magical equipment than is suggested for 10th-level PCs in 3e and not-too-exceptional stats. Fireball wreaks havoc even with hill giants.

A 10th level party consisting of Wizard, Sorceror, Cleric, Rogue, and Fighter could probably wipe out the dinner party. I do not think one Wiz can quite do it. 20 giants with Ready actions to throw a rock can do a lot of damage, even if you are invisible.

If the whole party is flying, Protections from Arrows will dractically cut down the giants ability to knock someone down with rocks.

Open up with 3 or 4 Confusions. 2 rounds of Fireballs from two arcane casters will leave one third of the giants dead. At that point the giants will probably scatter.

Passwall and Dimension Door makes the wood fortress quite permeable to the heroes.

I agree that 10th level is probably a bit too high. Neither sneaking nor fighting is going to be much of a challenge, especially if you have many spellcasters.

Fireball does an average of 35 hp damage, 17 on a save. We will ignore the possiblity of any saving for the moment.

Hill giants have an average of 102 hps. It takes three fireballs to clear a 20' radius spread area of giants. As I recall, the dinner hall is larger than that area.

Given the above, it is extremely likely that the combat is going to last more than the surprise partial action and one round.

Giants have a lot more hit points in 3e than they did in previous editions of D&D. It takes more fireballs to take them out.

If you were to start the fight, I think it would come out better if you open with a Slow spell (Will save, which still is tough for them) rather than a Fireball. Reduce the amount of attacks they can bring to bear against you.

Make it 11th level and I'll change my mind. Open with Mass Haste and follow up with Slow.

In any case, it is still much smarter to just sneak out, report, and maybe help with the cleanup action when the baron sends his men in.

What about peoples attempts at D1-3? Anybody run these as 3E yet?

No, the group refused. After I took them through G1-3 they said there was no way they wanted to go through the D series. Most of them have gone through it when the modules first came out, so didn't have found memories even though I changed things up. It was more a fearing for their characters then true rebelion. Besides, I said okay and then took them through the S series. :D

no group yet has managed to make it through the Gseries yet in my world...shame really..the q series is where the fun happens..
