Path of the Sword

Adventurer
I couldn't respond to the old thread on this due to my flaky server/firewall combo, so I figured I'd start a new thread.

I finally picked up Path of the Sword last night. Didn't read it thoroughly yet (you must forgive me... the LotR DVD came out last night, too) but from what I have seen, the book is very good, perhaps the best in the Legends & Lairs series to date.

A large part of the book is prestige classes, which will obviously turn some off. But I thought the prestige classes were well executed and highly campaign adaptable.

The monk prestige classes are amongst the best I have seen.

I am really excited about the legendary classes. Some of the abilities strike me as a bit powerful, but I find them a very interesting concept and cannot wait to start using them. They also seem like they would work well alongside the ELH.

It's the Lengendary classes I'm a little worried with. I like the idea, but it would be easy to get +5 to a certain attribute and I'm not sure how well that balances out. I do like that they are vary customible and offer interesting abilities.

Another thing I like is the Acrobatic Combat. I was really impressed with this section.

I don't have my ELH in front of me, but aren't there feats in there that allow you to +1 any stat you have? True, you can get up to +5 in a stat, if the class allows for that, but you have to balance that against the other abilities at power level 5...what's it worth to you?

THere are a lot of good powers, but it just seems that attribute bonuses are a lot more versatile. I'll have to see it in play to know for sure, but it did put up a caution flag.

I did really like the alternate classes. I think they did a good job on these.

Yup. Though I think classes like "dragon disciple" and "forsaker" that give you improved ability scores are a better reference points... but even comparing those, it seems a bit strong. I mean, I personally would always save the ability bonuses until the last two levels.

That said, most of the legendary classes have enough ability options that you can axe the ones that bother you.

I bought this book as a birthday present for one of my players... He is avid lover of Fighters and Barbarian, so far he really likes it.

This does look pretty fun and the preview looks great. Nice job!

I've finally had time to read it cover to cover. It has some great things in it. I really wish I could remake my Ranger using one of those Alt versions (and I'm already using the MC one).
