Unfortunately with two different revenue streams, it can get confusing. But how it works is: CONTENT PURCHASING You buy the books (one time purchase, discounted from cover price, I think comparable to Amazon or maybe bit cheaper), you get access to them on the website and the mobile app including downloading them for offline access in the app. You can access them for as long as the website or app are around (which is, of course a consideration for the long term). But no subscription is required. (Plus there's options for unlocking bundles I think like "everything for paladins" etc, but I haven't read up on that much to know the details.) SUBSCRIPTIONS Monthly (or discounted 6-month or yearly) subscriptions unlock site features. Hero tier subscription ($2.99/month) turns off ads, allows you to use community created homebrew content, and allows you to have unlimited active characters (I think the cap is 6? After that, you have to deactivate one to make a new one, I don't think they are deleted, just inactive). Master Tier ($5.99/month) gets everything Hero Tier does plus allows you to create up to 3 "campaigns" that can each have up to 12 characters from other users. In these campaigns, you can turn on Content Sharing, and then any book that anyone in the campaign has purchased is available to everyone in the campaign. So you could have each person in your group buy a book or two, and then they are shared between all of you as long as one of you has a Master Tier subscription (everyone else can have free accounts). For myself, I went ahead and bought everything (especially worth it since I didn't have most of the physical books yet), and through these I have one campaign that is for my kids and their friends who can then access all of the books. I have another campaign for my home game so that they have access to everything. And a third for my Play-by-post games. So my one time purchases are shared with about 15-20 people most of whom are teens who are new to the hobby, which is fun. There's more info on the subscriptions here. Basically, to unlock content, you pay once, to unlock website features, you subscribe. For certain situations (like mine), the Content Sharing of the subscription makes it a ridiculously good deal. For others, subscriptions are completely unnecessary as long as you are fine with only 6 active PCs at a given time and seeing an occasional ad on the website. (I have no idea how obtrusive the ads are.) For the books you purchase, you have access to them without a subscription for as long as the website or app work. I do know a lot of people kept asking for a subscription to unlock everything plan (like Spotify or Apple Music, etc.), so that confuses the discussion. But for now, at least, content is unlocked with one time payments. P.S. If anyone has more questions, feel free to PM me rather than keeping this off topic. I know I sound like a paid shill, but I just honestly really like the service. But, like I said, it doesn't fit everyone's needs, unfortunately.
