Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder/Cthulhu Hybrid --NPC's?

I'm a senior patron of Open Design's Red Eye of Azathoth, which is a hybrid of Pathfinder and Call of Cthulhu. It's set across 1,000 years, and players will adventure every 200 years or so in historical type settings.

The Red Eye of Azathoth [REAz] - $24.95 : Kobold Quarterly, http://www.koboldquarterly.com/

Enough background, though. On to my question:

Right now there is a discussion among the current patrons about whether to use Pathfinder rules as written versus Pathfinder rules, but only allowing players to play NPCs. My question is, for people who the background adventure sounds appealing, would you want to play it with an NPC class as your character? Would that be too limiting? Would that better get the "feel" of Cthulhu?

Your thoughts, and the reasons behind them would be appreciated. I'm particularly looking for player perspectives on this, but if you care to share a DM perspective as well, then great!

If you plan on becoming a patron, the project is also still open, and the voting on which system (or the use of NPCs) continues through September 4th.
