Yeah, from the beta playtesting and comments from the designers, I really got the impression that they approached things from rebuilding some of the base mechanics of the game to work better, which resulted in a trickle-down effect on a number of aspects of creatures. Hitpoints being one aspect that deviated significantly from before.
From the looks of the optimizing thread, where optimized fighter types are dealing 400+ damage in an optimal situation, I don't think the added hitpoints are going to significantly affect non-optimized characters.
If anything, the game is probably based around non-optimized (going by the iconics). Personally, I've always built more "well rounded" characters, capable of multiple things instead of focused completely on a single thing, and combat seems to flow fairly normally (although my experience at the high end is minimal still).
