Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Psionics (from Dreamscarred)

I'm entering the fray a little late, but I'd recommend a Spycraft Shadowforce Archer approach to psionics. Feats to gain access, then skill-based to manifest, as opposed to power points or "spell slots."

3catcircus - this is a bit out of the scope of what we're looking to do.

Primarily, because we're looking to update the 3.5 psionic rules for Pathfinder, and second, because Green Ronin already did that - and did it quite well - for 3.5.

The biggest reason to NOT lower the Hit Die to D8 is in Pathfinder Design Philosophy. Wherever BAB has required a hit die to be raised, Pathfinder added - but in the few cases where it would have lowered the hit die (Barbarian, Dragon Disciple), it was retained. This goes very well with the "add to classes, do not detract" philosophy of the Pathfinder RPG as well as being reiterated by the many possible builds available for the Soulknife. While one CAN build a dedicated skirmisher, this is in no way the definite way to build your Soulknife - the reason for giving options is to give people the ability to define their OWN vision of the Soulknife, and most approaches to the class involves melee.

Yeah, I can see why you went the way you did. I had forgotten about Barbarian and Dragon Disciple.

Like I said, I really strongly like what I'm seeing so far, especially with soulknife and wilder :D

Good to hear you guys are liking what we are putting out! :D

I just sent over the Alpha PsyWar to Jeremy, which means it'll be up in a while at our website! :D

Oh, btw - The Mind Unveiled @ 160+ pages is now available for sale too *very proud author of said book*

Awesome news.

I agree that the XPH is pretty damn good. I'd go a bit farther and say that the only possible area the rules could use improvement on is the issue James Jacobs seems to bring up and that is NPC's with psionics (i.e. psionic monsters) and their lack of reason to hold back during an encounter and not blow all their power points against the PC's. A GM should be able to manage this type of thing but it seems to bug some people to the point that they decide not to allow psionics. The Expanded Psionics Handbook had an alternative to the rules as they are (essentially cutting the power points on monsters by half iirc). Not a big issue for me but I know some detractors harp on this issue quite a bit.

I have never understood this complaint abotu psionics. Its no different than NPC wizards or sorcerers shooting their entire load and leaving themselves empty becuase they are just NPC goons. What makes psionics so different that this is problem there but not with regular spellcasters?

I've been running a campaign for five years, and the party psion has gone from 1st level to 15th level in that time. There are two main problematic issues that I see - one is a specific power (Mind Thrust) that does too much damage IMO, and the other is the way that all the energy spells allow a pick-and-choose approach to powers and effects. It gives the Psion too much flexibility, and not enough drawbacks to their powers.

We've got that 2nd one covered - only kineticists get to change the type of energy for their powers. All others (wilders, nomads, telepaths, etc) all have to pick the energy type when they pick the power.

So, while this would allow "energy ray [cold]" and "energy wave [fire]" - they can't change it on the fly.

As for the first one... Mind Thrust, in my experience, is weak, especially at higher levels - save wipes out all the damage, and it's of a damage type that has the most common immunity. Against undead, plants, elementals, constructs, and others, it's completely wasted...

That being said, I could see a drop to d8, but if that was the case, I'd implement a Will half instead of a Will negates... d8 is comparable to fire or cold energy power, it should be noted.

That's one of the best ideas I've seen in this thread.

I wouldn't touch Mind Thrust. My $0.02

The Alpha release of the Psion Uncarnate is now available!

The Alpha release for the Psion has also been released, my apologies for not posting it sooner.

Andreas expects to have a Psychic Warrior Alpha 2 release this week, and I'll be posting the War Mind and Thrallherd likely today.
