Actually, the line of products - Pathfinder (Adventure Paths), Pathfinder Modules and Pathfinder Chronicles - have been in production for almost a year now... and are most likely what has caused the Pathfinder RPG to be a worthwhile venture.

Paizo is (and has been) producing adventure paths, stand-alone modules and system-light supports products for 3.5.
Well, they have to when they were stripped of their D&D magazine publication rights.

But can they compete with 4e? Now that's the true test. Many (incluidng myself) are hoping.

They don't have to. Paizo does not need near the same level of sales that WotC needs to have successful product lines.

True, but they need enough to sustain itself, and a few more for profit to line their own pockets (which will be emptied once they have to fill up gas, pay bills, feed mouths, etc.).

For my in person groups role-playing needs. I need something fairly plug and play , and something everyone at the table can get a copy of the rules.
4E may not quite fit that, although everybody can get a copy of the rules. wizards core setting isn't that appealing, so published adventures also may not be appealing. And if 3rd parties arn't producing adventures 4E isn't really playable.
While with 3.5 I have issues with rules wise I can still play. And there are plenty of adventures out there already published I can buy. Plus with Pazio commitment to pathfinder I get a continued supply of adventures.
My online role-playing has different needs, and how well the digital tabletop works out probably has a lot to do with my long term commitment to 4E.
So I believe Pazio choice with backwards compatibility is exactly right for me. I need a rule set that works with 3rd edition rules. My only complaint so far is I think they are adding to much, rather than trying to make the rules lighter.
