Dontcha just hate it when you find out you've paid for a product that hasn't even been produced yet? I've had this happen with three companies I found online ((naming no names)); they advertise a nifty new product as though it was ready to ship out, and the last comment you hear from the order clerk before the phone line goes dead is, "We'll have that out to you as soon as the material reaches the printer."

Or am I the only one stupid enough to fall for this?

Yes. I just bought a touted product two weeks ago, not realizing that, apparently, it hasn't been printed. Or hasn't been somethinged. It's not ready, in any case, and there's no firm indications I can find as to when it really will be shipped.

It's a reputable company, so I'm not overly worried, but it is annoying. It would've been very nice to have for a project I'm working on now.

Cheers
nell.

Ditto. These are good companies I've dealt with; I know my product will arrive, sooner or later. But in the meantime, it bugs me that my funds have already been shifted to the company's account and I have nothing to show for it.

I've had that problem with New Wave. If a RPG company ever did that with my money, not taking a preorder mind you, but charging my credit card before the order was shipped, I'd report them to the BBB in a hearbeat as well as let others know what was going on.

Just because it's a small business doesn't mean your ethics should be any less than say, Amazon.com or other companies that chage you when product ships, not when you order.

Of course if those are the terms of the preorder, that's a different story entirely.

I normally don't preorder anything, anyway; I'm of the opinion that it does too much to support bad products, and unless there's a limited supply of whatever available, or there's some kind of bargain for grabbing it early, I'm patient enough to wait until I have some clue as to what I'll be paying for.

Things like books not even being printed yet increases that desire not to buy something ahead of time.

Ah yes new wave. Like others I had problems with them to but in an opposite manner. I saw a product in their catolog that I wanted that had been out for a while. I ordered waited two or so weeks before I called and found out that the product was out of stock and might never come back into stock. I did mangage to get everything to work out I think, it was a year or two ago.

Moral of the story: Don't order from New Wave.
