PBP + Chat for Combat?

Insight

Adventurer
I have an idea for an alternate way to run an online game, and if I ever was going to run an online game, I might use the method proposed below. Interested in getting feedback from experienced online gamers.

Everything except for combat would be run on the boards, in the standard play-by-post method. Character submission, getting together, deciding what to do, etc would all be done by posts.

When it comes time for combat, the individual rounds would be handed via chat client, be it AIM, Yahoo, IRC, etc.

Once the combat has completed, everything would return to the boards.

That's the basics. Let me know what you think of such a system, and if any of you have ever tried do run or play in a game this way.

Thanks

Logistical problem is timing, some people don't have the time to sit down... and do the chat thing which is why they PbP but it could work quite well :)

Yep, with different time zones (and schedules), this can hardly work out.

You are surely not the first to think about that. :)

The benefit of PbP is exactly that you don't need to have the same schedule (plus distance is not a factor).

Though Tokiwong and Thanee both bring up good points I disagree with Thanee... It could very well work, granted it's will be a logistic nightmare, but your going to need more dedicated players than usual and your honestly going to have to look at those who’s schedules are more concrete and or set in stone.

Also for those times that some of your players cannot show they are going to have to allow someone else to make there IC decisions.

Also if you get this game running your going to have to make a recap post for those who missed it and for those who simply read the IC thread for your game… Sounds weird but it does happen. ;)

Yes. An obvious stipulation for any player would have to be certain home time zones or an ability to get together in chat form during those times. And yeah, a combat recap would be a must.

Sure, if you can find a group with similar free-time schedules, that would work, I guess.

That's a pretty huge restriction, tho. :)

Probably you need to list possible times (with time zone) in the recruitment thread then, so only players with the right schedule do apply in the first place.

Huge message board I'm sure there is enough to forum an at least one game at whatever time he needs it.

The big issue is at the moment your never going to know when combat is going to happen. It could be on a Sunday, Saturday, or any day in between...
