PC as a mount?

I just read an amusing idea on the CO board at WotC, and have to wonder if this would actually work.
Fighter2/wizard1

Max out your ranks in ride and get the mounted combat feat. Since you have mounted combat and maxed out ranks in ride so will your familar. Have your familar ride you as a mount and have it make a mounted combat check every time you get hit in combat to negate the attack.

I mean, that's brilliant! But it can't possibly be legit, can it?

For each skill in which either the master or the familiar has ranks, use either the normal skill ranks for an animal of that type or the master’s skill ranks, whichever are better. In either case, the familiar uses its own ability modifiers. Regardless of a familiar’s total skill modifiers, some skills may remain beyond the familiar’s ability to use.

I'm with you this far. Show me where a familiar gets to use his masters feats, though...

Gee, wow, what great input there guys.

Like someone said - familiars don't get feats.

However - what DO you do when someone with mounted combat wants to ride an intelligent creature? Does their mounted combat just not work? What intelligence does mounted combat stop working at? 2? 3? 5?

What happens when the bad guys decide to target your low AC, low hit point familiar? Maybe you can have the fleas on your familiar make Ride checks for the familiar to avoid being hit.

Now that is being a bit ridiculous.

In the end, if a creature has the appropriate feats I would allow them to use them. I believe in a different thread someone mentioned a book which had armor with special slots for a 'rider' even though the mount is intelligent or bipedal.

If you could have a much smaller creature than yourself gain the mounted feats and you didnt mind that creature taking advantage of them on your back then they should be able to do so.

Assuming that one could get the familiar to have the feats and some special armor additions were made and the character spends the skill points to make it work then it should be allowed.

It sounds like a long way to go around to possibly negate a single attack a round, and that is only if you can roll high enough on your ride check.

Pay the cost, get the benefit. It isnt like it would be easy, or cheap, or even guarenteed effective.

Although I personally prefer to gain those feats myself and then use some interesting polymorphing and other such effects to make me ride around on the familiar.. but that is just my preference ;)
