(PC) FPS game recommendations

VorpalWarrior69

First Post
So, I spent most of the last 2-3 years playing old PS2 role playing games and ignoring the PC game market (with the exception of repeatedly playing my beloved Jagged Alliance 2 and Fallout 2).

I recently upgraded my PC, and find that I have an itch to play a good brainy FPS. Here are a list of the games that I have fond memories of:
System Shock 1 & 2
Deus Ex
Half Life

I think that some obvious ones that I will look into are:
Half Life 2
BioShock

Are there any other out there that you all recommend? Don't be afraid to mention older games, because chances are that I haven't played them.

On a completely seperate tangent, what is your opinion of Hellgate: London? The reviews that I have checked out have been pretty underwhelming, but damn...I really did enjoy the demo. Does it get stale after a while, or is it likely that if I enjoyed the first hour of playing, that I will enjoy the next 40?

Thanks!

Hellgate: London... just bought it (only because it cost less than €10,-). From what I have heard it's about as much fun as D2, but does not nearly have the longevity. For cheap it surely will provide enough fun to justify the purchase.

As for FPS... Call of Duty 4 is mentioned a lot and tops a few best-fps-ever lists AFAIK.

A little older... Stalker, Far Cry, Max Payne.

Also Crysis is quite some fun (the only FPS I actually have ;)).

When you get HL2, get the Orange Box (Portal!).

Havn't played most of these games myself, but I think they are good recommendations, nonetheless. :)

I really like Quake Wars: Enemy Territory, it's only good in multiplayer (no single player campaign), but multiplayer is good and easy to join. You just have to play Portal, and that's as good a reason as any to buy The Orange Box.

Didn't the makers of Hellgate London go belly up (yesterday)?

Yep, though they are still in existance... somewhat.

San Francisco, CA (July 14, 2008) -- Flagship Studios has announced today that despite rumors to the contrary, the company is still operating.

“It is with deep regret that I must announce that Flagship Studios has laid off most employees. However, the core management and founding team members are still at Flagship.” said Bill Roper, CEO of Flagship Studios. “The past five years have been an incredible experience for us, but unfortunately, we couldn’t sustain the size of the company any longer.”

Flagship Studios owns the rights to all its technology and IP, including Hellgate: London and Mythos. Due to the current situation, Flagship will not be taking any new subscribers for Hellgate: London, and all current subscriptions will not be billed.

Flagship wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to those that have supported the company and games over the past five years.

I loved STALKER. The mood, setting, and landscapes are incredible.

If you've never played it, Half-Life 2 is essential. I also really liked Far Cry.

I haven't played many newer FPS's but Bioshock and Crysis looked very good (although Bioshock has that stupid DRM mechanism).

STALKER is awesome, best pure 1st perosn shooter, ever.

best 1st person GAME I'd say, is Vampire the Masquerade, Bloodlines.
it's unique in it's brilliance, IMHO :)
just make sure ot get the 1.2 offical patch, and then get latest unnoficial patch, makes a huge improvement.

Malkavians are brilliant fun, haha ;)

I believe they've removed the DRM thing at this point.

I also recommend F.E.A.R. It was pretty cool. Max Payne as well, though its older so it might not look so great these days. The second Max Payne was OK but not as good as the first.
