I think that the conclusion of this thread is: ASK THE DM.

And for me to max out my sense motive in the face of an array of bluffs and intimidates.

Diplimacy specifically says in the rules text it cannot be used against a PC.

In part because it would most often be the DM who would use it on the players:

"The BBEG rolled a 68 on his Diplomacy check. You are now friendly to him...heck, you are now fanatical followers of his. Bow down to the BBEG!!! Grovel, players, grovel!!"

Yes, that may not be appreciated, I can agree.
