D&D 3E/3.5 PC subraces in MM3.5

First Post
I noticed alot of subraces in the MM. Personally, I think my new favorite race is the "Wood Elf". All the benefits of Elves except +2 strength, -2 intelligence and favored class of Ranger....welcome to my new barbarian, fighter, or cleric race.

I noticed alot of +1 lvl races I would not allow but I was curious if anyone else had found a better subrace?

They still got -2 Con, though. Notice that the ability mods are "in addition to", not "instead of". So you might want to rethink that barbarian;)

One thing they need to fix is the forest gnomes, who just get more abilities than the rock gnomes and are still LA +0. In particular, by the rules as written, they get a +2 bonus to hit kobolds and goblinoids (IMO they forgot to mention that their attack bonuses replace the regular gnomes' bonuses).

Thanks for the correction. SO..it basically means that a wood elf has a net modifier of +2 to strength, -2 to Con (the intelligence effects cancel). Very interesting...I think it is balanced now that I understand it correctly. I will check the forest gnomes.

Thanks,

Not quite: high elves got +2 Dex, -2 Con (the int bonus is for gray elves). So a wood elf has +2 Dex, +2 Str and -2 Con, -2 Int. Still, by the DMG guidelines for balancing abilities, this is a net gain (Str bonus being worth twice as much as Int penalty).

In the FR, the wood elves have +Str, +Dex, -Con, -Int, -Cha (Elf and Half-orc rolled into one). Nice ranger race, and they're probably more prone to become barbarians than other elven subraces, too (there are no known Sun Elf or Avariel Barbarians, for example).
