I don't know about non-epic levels (and yeah, I've gone through the numbers too), but someone over at the WotC boards figured a good formula for epic - level^2 x 1900. You end up with 760,000 at 20th level, and a nice progression thereafter, and you can drop the x10 (artificially added) multiplier for magic items.
Oh, try plotting this on a chart - it's really interesting how the gp progression starts slow, then around 10th level, it goes nearly straight up.
