PCGen 2.6.7 Available. Faster and with Apprentice Levels!

My thoughts on the individual that wrote that review:

* I'd like to see you write a program with the power of PC Gen. Post it where I can download it, and then I'll review YOUR software.

* Learn to communicate without cursing. It immediately tends to cause people to think of you as less intelligent then you might be.

* Some parts of your review make me think you know what you're talking about when it comes to computers - and other parts make you sound like a total newb. Just a comment.

* Spend some time with PC Gen. More time. Time without cursing it. It really does work if you give it time. Is it pretty? No. But it's FREE.

Let me reiterate that. Free. Free? FREE.

Ok, I'm done here.

well it was his friend doing it late at nite and i can see the frustration but i would like to point him to the part3_3.zip file that IS THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL! It was written mostly by me and the author of pcgen and it is a COMPELTE walkthruogh of the tabs and information. It tells you what to do with pcgen, what all the drop downs mean, and explanation of the GUI.

If your friend would RTM ( :) ) I think his problems would be solved!

Let me know if I can help any!

Leopold, you're a saint. Let me rephrase it for you:

RTFM..!

Now of course, I've lowered myself to using profanity, albeit only with a single letter. Booo hoo.

My friend is quite intelligent, but can be a little excitable. He is a professional software engineer for what its worth.

As for the instruction manual, he did install all three zip files. Whenever he tried to bring up the help, the window (the help one) crashed.

You can blame me for his "review". Or, more precisely, rant. It was a personal email to me that I took liberty with in posting. He ranted at me because I told him it was a good program. Unbeknownest to me the point-buy system is broken (which I observed later and posted here about), and the help documentation does not work.

Cheers,
/ds

He pulled down the help menu and tried to access help or search. A DOS box pops up and then goes away, like it tried to run a java command and failed. The tiny help works (i.e., explaining the obvious), but the more detailed help, the one he needed, did not.

His other analogy: The first PCGen was a steel knife--straightforward functionality that worked. The current version is a Swiss Army Knife--but it is made of plastic.

Lastly, he did have good comments. He likes the character sheets that I have produced using it. And it does seem very powerful.

the pages that he wants are not in the HELP section. IN the file 3_3.zip it creats a ton of extra docs that you will have to open up. They are all .htm so any web browser will work. Look at those first and see if they help.

I'll pass that on. FYI, any comments on the "broken" point buy?

don't have pcgen in front of me at the moment. His best option is to turn to the Yahoogroup and ask it there. Dollars to doughnuts it's been addressed already.

OK. I know I'm gonna get yelled at but a couple of these comments are justl.... well... wrong.

This one in particular. I use a computer. I use one all the time. I'm fairly computer literate. However, I can't program, don't want to program, and probably never will program. Evenso, I know a piece of crap software when I see it. (The current incarnation of PCGen is not a POS software!) Telling someone that they have no reason to bitch about something if they can't create something similar is bunk.

* Some parts of your review make me think you know what you're talking about when it comes to computers - and other parts make you sound like a total newb. Just a comment.
Newb, shnewb. You want your software to spread and be useful to the D&D community at large? Make it newb friendly. The new PCGen is leaps and bounds in that direction from previous incarnations. Before, I wouldn't even touch it any longer than it took me to realize I could do a character faster on paper. Now it's much nicer.

And that means...? Look. Food that's in the dumpster out back of my apartment is free, too. I'm not going to go eat it. Free does not mean quality. Free doesn't mean you don't have the right to complain. Especially in a message that was obviously a private email.

Maybe I'm being a bit harsh. I probably am. But I'm getting tired of hearing these same statements everytime a newb complains about the program in a moment of frustration brought about by that very same program. It's possibly the number one reason I didn't bother to learn to use PCGen earlier. If I asked a question, I was usually met with condescension and/or derogatory remarks about my intelligence. It certainly didn't bring a potential PCGen user (and possible contributor) into the fold.

However, some of your comments are spot on:
* Learn to communicate without cursing. It immediately tends to cause people to think of you as less intelligent then you might be.

doc clueless and crimster i think you both are in agreement here! I don't know why your arguing on that you like pcgen can't we all just get along? :D
