PCs and the people that love them

One of the PCs in my game just got Leadership. His backstory/goal involves reclaiming his baronial seat which was usurped when he was a kid. He's just run into a childhood friend whose family served the PC's family for generations (new cohort). He has also been making a point of "advertising" his accomplishments with hired bards and minstrels, so he will soon start attracting followers. These people will form the core of a mercenary force he's planning to put together to reclaim his inheritance.

Now that DMG II is out, I wanna try a high chr character with enough charisma to get 48 followers, so that they can form an angry MOB (with that template). Finally, combat-useful followers!

We usually don't end up having any followers/cohorts because we already have 6 player/characters and adding any more people to the mix just makes it too complex. But one of our current FR campaigns has a goblin follower of sorts - the paladin took pity on him and he's been with us ever since. He doesn't really qualify as a GMNPC because I don't think he'd even be there if the paladin's player hadn't insisted on keeping him, although it's the GM who runs him.

I did play in one campaign where we had a paladin with a mess of cohorts, but they usually ended up getting left behind to watch the horses because we already had so many PCs.

We are currently at 11 PCs, 4 followers, 1 hireling (the other just died), 1 ally (who is retiring), 1 charmed, and 7 little blue vassals.

EDIT: I may be forgetting a couple.

My main character - see signature for the Story Hour - Lucifus Cray the Alienist took leadership for a couple of reasons:

1) He has Tunthi the Half-Orc (cohort) following him around (good comedy value if for no other reason).
2) He has a very large number of young women (followers) who comprise his harem.
3) He has a handful of like minded experts in the field of Arcana and the Planes forming his cult - The Diabolerie Arcane.
4) He now also has a Dwarven librarian (follower) who he can trust not to sell anything he's not supposed to (Lucifus travels around in his portable tower selling books and other strange arcane devices). However, the librarian is so dull, he could almost be described as eccentric.

High level combined with good charisma and a certain level of notoriety means that his leadership score is pretty good. However, I let Paul the Wunder DM worry about the numbers. I just give him the personalities of each follower and cohort.

As you can guess the majority of this is for flavour although sometimes it helps in terms of information. Followers are fun but would be down right annoying if you had to cart them around everywhere.

Anyway, if you are interested by this unusual use of followers, follow the link below.

Best Regards

My current character, Magda Rayale, is a rogue/adventurer type with experience as a sea captain. She has the Leadership feat, with a cohort--a 6th level Ranger with excellent archery skills--and six 1st level followers, a mix of sailors and warriors. I've never had followers before, so I'm still not sure how to play them. In the last adventure, I was torn between leaving the cohort, who's my First Officer, on the ship in case it's attacked and bringing him along for his archery abilities. I ended up leaving him on the ship. Still not sure if that was a good choice. I brought 2 sailors with me, nearly got one killed, sent her back to the ship and got another. I'm now experimenting with using them to reload pistols and such. I'm paranoid about getting them killed. Leadership's a heavy burden. :)
