PC's From Earth!

The Lyonesse stories by Jack Vance? I need to read those. Have you picked up the Dying Earth RPG? Gospog wrote an amazing Dying Earth Story Hour.
They're the ones. Good stories, gives you some idea of a pretty fantastical world with a lot of implied history.

I've never read any of the Dying Earth novels, so I've not given the game a second look. Mostly I claim poverty, but I will look at it when next I'm in my FLGS.

I'll be sure to look up Gospog's Story Hour. Thanks for the heads-up. :)

Gasp! OK, I just read them this past year. It's something every D&D player should do -- and they're excellent!

I can even give you a link:

Ooh, he even has Omega World and Mecha Crusade Story Hours. (Those are both games from Polyhedron magazine.) I may have to check those out -- even if he's not channeling Jack Vance.

One of the campaigns I've always wanted to run is an "It's Earth, milennia after we bung things up past all recognition, and things settle into a D&D'ish worldview". I know it's been done to death before, but I like the idea, and now all I need are players and projection maps.
The Omega World mini-game from Polyhedron might make for a good start. And some videos of Thundarr the Barbarian.
My problem with "earthlings sent to another world" is that it either gets overly cheesy, or else someone invariably looks up how to make gunpowder and attempts to leverage that into a "how to make modern firearms" benefit.
How hard is it to say "no"? I mean, you know your friends haven't ever made gunpowder, and you know they don't even know what saltpeter really is, so just call 'em on it.
