PCs running monsters

Random thought...

There's a player in my game (the dreaded drag-along-girlfriend) who, while she's interested enough and at least claims to enjoy it, doesn't do so well with keeping track of everything.

So I just thought that maybe, rather than her playing a normal PC, I could stat her up a character like a monster, e.g. give her a couple recharge powers, a simple stat block instead of a character sheet, etc.

What do you think?

I did exactly that for one person, and thought it worked quite well.

On my pile of things I don't have time for was an intent to make monster class progressions for a bunch of character archtypes.

I figured I'd just do 'em all up on the spot. It takes me all of about 10 minutes to make a new monster, from concept to ready-to-print stat block, thanks to certain tools.

Only issues I'm trying to figure out would be loot... I'm thinking that she'd not be allowed to have any items (at least, not in any mechanically-significant sense), since the whole point here is to keep everything simple and self-contained. I'd still ensure the other PCs gave her a fair share of the money, which would disappear as she used it for upkeep, maintenance, etc.

I'd go ahead and give her loot - just make it items with bonuses and properties that are always in effect, rather than powers.

That way you can just build their effect right into the character without increasing its complexity any.

Otherwise, it sounds like a good idea and may be a way to bring new players into the game without forcing them to learn the entire system right away.
