I could have sworn that, back when 4e was announced, WotC made some sort of a promise that once you bought a 4e book, you'd immediately have free access to the .pdf. Did I imagine this, or is this just yet another empty promise from WotC?

Neither. This eventually transformed into the Rules Compendium idea with all rules being accessible via a database. I'm sure someone can find the links to The Rouse's pertinent posts.

I don't recall for sure, but I was under the impression that the word ".pdf" was conspicuously absent. When they revealed details about the rules compendium, I figured that's what they were referring to with the unlocking.

Anyone Knows if Wotc will ever release the 4ed books in pdf?

A couple of days ago I saw a reply from Scott Rouse saying he "hopes" they will be out later this week. But maybe later than that.
