PDF Product Ideas

I think this is ok here, rather than buried in E-Publishing. :)

I'm thinking of putting some pdfs together to raise some airfare funds for Gencon (in another thread I explained how our road trip was rudely pulled out from under us a few days ago (for good reason, I say rude with love ;) ). Which of the following ideas do you like the best? Keep in mind that I'll likely be putting out several of these, keeping them rather short and cheap.

-A pdf detailing a boss monster and his minions, perhaps with a sample lair, perhaps not. You could drop it into any dungeon complex, or build a story around him.

-A pdf with monsters with class levels at different stages, like the ones on the WotC site...Fight Club? This would be a pure utilitarian package probably, with something like "here's a gnoll with 1,3,5,7,9, and 15 levels of fighter. "Here's a goblin with 1,3,5,7,9, and 15 levels of rogue."

-A pdf of templated or variant monsters: oh look, a fire otyugh! It's a celestial treant! This would be another utilitarian bit, a companion to idea #2.

Thanks!

Ryan Dancy reccomended this, I believe. Sounds good to me.

Does CMG's statblock book cover this? I haven't gotten around to picking it up. Anyway, I think it's a fine idea.

all those should be good ideas. Just make sure the stats are good and that they are all easy for DMs to drop into their campaign.

I don't have it either, so I don't know if it covers it or not. Heck, it might cover both #2 and #3 for all I know.

But how would it sell? Is another monster book going to do well, even in the pdf market?

I dunno.

The idea must be gold if pdf publishers are invading my thread to poo on the ideas! :p

LOL. I am not poo pooing the idea. As a matter of fact, I have a monster books in the works as we speak, but my sales expectations are very low.

If you really want a book that sells, I would recommend something else.

But I dunno, I have yet to try and sell a monster book.

The impression I get from people, though, is that there is a huge glut of monster books already. And for God's sake, don't make a prestige class book.

I was just kidding. :) I'm not creating a pdf company here, i'm just trying to raise a little cash. I think they'll sell well enough for that. The reason i'm shooting for utility products is precisely to differentiate from "just another monster book." I'm trying to create time-savers, things DMs might buy and use again and again.

I'll be sure and report to interested parties, though. ;)
