PDFs and bookmarking.

PDFs- With bookmarks or without?

I perfer to have all PDF book marked. I underst nd that some small ones might not need them, but its easier if they are all just book marked.

WHat a lack of bookmarks would make me do, is consider not buying from the publisher in the future. The reason why is because bookmarks are so easy to put in. It's pretty much laziness IMHO if a publisher doesnt put them in. The PDF should be as easy to use as possible. That also includes cutting and pasting. I bought one product which severely irked me because I couldn't cut and paste the material into my story. It defeated the purpose of the product. They ended up fixing it in latter products.

Bookmarks all the way. They're so easy to add there isn't really a reason not to include them. That and printer friendly versions as well. Both of these options should be in every PDF.

Actually, MS Word messes up the bookmarks every time I use it - requiring hand correction (and re-correction each time I fix a typo or do anything else that requires a re-save).

It seems that turning the Table of Contents into Bookmarks would be a no-brainer and must-have functionality. But, like so many things, it is apparently beyond the competence of the boys in Redmond.

I still include bookmarks in every product, and always will, but it is a tedious process at times.

I agree with Phil - even on small PDFs, they are very useful. You can't thumb through an unprinted PDF, so bookmarks are essential for that birds-eye view. More importantly, unless they're simply wrong, they never detract from the utility of the product. Potentially useful + no drawback = mucho goodnesso.

Another note that relates is security setting on PDFs. I have a number of them that are set so as to not allow the creation of bookmarks by the user (most Malhavoc PDFs are this way.) That irritates me, because - well, like I would with a normal book - I'd often like to mark a place I found particularly important. Granted, the Malhavoc PDFs are always well-bookmarked to begin with, but there have still been times when I wanted to bookmark something specific in there, and "gee, too bad." This isn't a dealbreaker for me - heck, even a complete lack of bookmarks isn't, though I much prefer them and am less likely to purchase more from the publisher if they're not included - but it's certainly an irritation.

In answer to the original post, I would happily pay extra for the (well-)bookmarked version.

In fact, sensible bookmarking ranks higher for me than general presentation. Not that I don't appreciate good layout and design, but yeah, even so.

Do the bookmarks in Acrobat. It's much easier.
