Well, there is an artifact in the Realms called the Moonpenguin of Boof. It's from the comics, but I've got no idea what it does, where it comes from, or if it's even real.

If you want them to be, but...

Penguins are a Southern Hemisphere Bird in our world. And not all of them are from cold lands. Some of them live in rather Warm Areas of the Southern Seas.

Also, I believe the Dohwar also rode Giant Flying Space Pigs into Battle.

Sadly, I am not making that up.

One of the SJ Races rode Winged Space Boars into battle. And I think it was the Penguins.

After all, the Gnomes had Giant Space Hamsters.

(I'm Guessing there wasn't a lot of Drug Testing during that time at TSR).

This is from the 2nd Ed. MC: "Amazingly, the dowhar have figured out that groundling civilizations may be disconcerted by their avian apprearance. On these planets, the dohwar wear heavy hoods and cloaks and try to pass for short people." Given their "reputation as hucksters out to hoodwink," one could easily picture them as Jawas rip-offs.

Actually, on page 37 of FR14: The Great Glacier, it states that the among the Iulutiuns, their favorite birds to eat are, "penguins, terns, gulls, and puffins."

I always loved the Dohwar, silliness and all. Not sure I liked that one interpreation though. Is Detect Thoughts at will that strong? And where's the mind link?
