Penumbra Fantasy Bestiary Requests

1. If providing familiars, make sure that the benefits are clearly listed.

2. If providing any monster that advances by character class/level, include racial modifiers and stats so GMs can customize them. Both Liber Bestarius and Monsternomicon took a step in the right direction by making several of the races 'playable' but let the owner determine what is playable and include stats for all creatures that advance by race instead of just what's 'playable'.

3. Would it be possible to make use of the various Lores introduced in Monsternomicon?

4. How about the silhoutted size comparissions in Monsternomicon?

5. Example characters ala "Instant Badass" from Liber?

This book has got a lot to live up to. It's no longer suffcient to merely put out a book of monsters. Too many other books have raised the bar.

Those two items should now be standard in every monster book, it is amazing how much such a simple idea added to the feel of the Monsternomicon.

Yep... and as far as lore goes, they can easily be used as abstract levels of information a PC or NPC might have about the beasty. It does not require an associated mechanic.

Just wanted to pop in and say thanks for the feedback -- the comments have been passed along to Michelle, who is up to her neck in editing monsters right now. ;)

I agree with 1 and 2 completely. I also agree that most monster books tend to be a little too conservative about what's playable - looking at my copy of the Liber, for instance, I think that a Thal or a Sorcerer's Apprentice(tm) would make for a viable and interesting character.

3, 4 and 5 I can take or leave. If the monsters interest me, they're a bonus, but if the monsters don't grab me, they're not enough.

(I actually passed on the Monsternomicon, despite how well done it is, because the monster mix wasn't quite what I was looking for.)

I wanted to assert that the only thing I didn't like about Liber was the instant Badass. That said, I can't wait for Penumbra's Monster book. I loved Nyambe and Occult Lore. It will be nice to see Penumbras take on the MM. I bet it will rule.
