Persistant spell

Not foolish at all, Lord P. I think noting that a spell would require a 13th level spell slot is pretty important! For those of us without the added books, it also let us know how many levels higher a persistant spell needs to be! So thanks! :)

That being said, I don't think I'd take this feat. My Wiz just turned 10th level, and I think the limited number of spells I could use with it make it a rather unremarkable feat. A 24 hour Shield is great ... but it takes up a really rare 5th level spell slot. I'd rather just memorize it 2 or 3 times and cast it before each battle. IMHO, of course.

Re

Persistent spell kind of sucks after looking at that list. I rarely need a permanent Shield Spell up.

When did Polymorph Self change so that you can't keep changing form throughout the duration?

Shard - Thanks for coming to my defense.

Pendragon - No sweat. It's a long list, I don't figure everyone made it to the bottom. :o

Lucius - The level increase imposed by the feat was already mentioned in not-Sean's post, the second in this thread. Also, instead of filling high-level spell slots with persistent spells, I scribe some meta-magic'ed scrolls during downtime.

Detect magic, Shield, Exp. Retreat, and Detect Thoughts are my preferences for persistence.

[edit] I also like "detect secret doors" for a dungeon-crawl. [/edit]

Sucks? After long debate, I've just removed it from my game as being too powerful. There aren't any balance problems when it is applied to most of the core spells, but some spells in the splat books - including R&R and R&R2 - are highly abuseable with the feat. Any one round per lvl spell becomes problematic when it goes from one round per level to 24 hours.

Was it really too powerful? I debated this as well but I figured since 1) there was a limited number of spells that could be used for this feat and 2) it takes up a slot 4 levels higher that it was pretty fair. After all, a quickened spell is pretty powerful, too ... but since its four levels higher, it's fair.

Hmmm... but we don't use R&R or R&R2. Perhaps that's why it wasn't so bad.

Probably. Those books are pretty good, but there are some exceptions. For instance, the spell Force of Will lets you substitute your Wisdom bonus for your Str, Dex, or Con one. It's fine on its own; but cast persistantly by a cleric, you can have up to all your physical scores as high as your wisdom for 24 hours. That strikes me as problematic.

It's not on the list but I think circle vs(Evil) would work for this spell. I don't think it gets discharged and it has a fixed range. I think that would be a nice 7th level slot. No summoned monsters within a range, no charms compulsions within a range. keep some of this meat shields on your side of the battle for a change.

And a 5th level slot is well worth a persistent shield, heck that's almost reason enough to pick up the feat. Magic missle immunity and +7 to ac vs one side of the battlefield all day rocks. Also combo persistent shield and persistent blink, and blinks weakness vs force effects virtually gets neutralized since Magic missile is one of the few force effect spells.

Tome and Blood is when I first saw it. If you have it re-read it there. It says as poly other and never mentions the except you can change forms bit anymore. I didn't catch it at first, I think i noticed it like a month later on my next re-read of the book.

Yep ... here's the T&B version (I think).

Yeah, sounds like Force of Will would be rather unfair with Persistant Spell.

I wish the feat simply changed the intervals of time instead of making it into 24 hours. Perhaps changing 1 min/level into 1 hour/level and changing 1 rd/level into 1 min/level. Maybe take up a slot 2 or 3 levels higher. And have it affect any spell with a duration other than instantaneous like Extend Spell does.

That might balance it out a bit.
