Peter Jackson's influence on The Hobbit

And dark is good for the hobbit, it didn't really end all that cheery in the grand scheme of things. Starts bright, takes a turn for the AHHHHHHHH and then pulls into more of a general , *SIGH* what an adventure kind of mode. Del Toro can pull this off, especially with Jackson holding final purse strings.

I have never seen The Hobbit as cartoonish, but then I've never thought it has been accurately portrayed either. As readers we have all tended to identify with Bilbo, which is a good thing, but his simple mindedness seems to elude everyone I've spoken with. Think very carefully, a hobbit who's biggest fear up until this point is running out of food and drink, is suddenly thrust against trolls, orcs, wargs and dragons. It should have that nightmarish feel to it.

As for special effects, if PJ's production studio is behind this, I would imagine he is flipping the bill for the props, FX and make-up. I wouldn't be too concerned about goblins with 6 eyes and poison stingers. ;)

I'm really starting to get psyched up about this now.

I've always seen the Hobbit as tragic more than anything else. I found the death of Thorin Oakenshield really sad.

I hope that the battle of the five armies has a little more substance than it did in the book :)

I'm hoping that is pretty much the second movie and how Del toro transitions from his style to Peter Jacksons style.

Do we know the split point between the two movies?

If we don't, where to you think it should be?

I don't remember the story all that well, but I'm wondering whether the first part will end on a high or a low.

e.g. with Gandalf off to face the necromancer and the dwarfs trussed up by the spiders, or with a big battle (Gandalf faces the necromancer and escape from the spiders)

What do you think?

Guillermo Del Toro does great visual work. I'm looking forward to this movie. I'm not as invested in The Hobbit as I was in Lord of the Rings. I'll be able to sit back and enjoy the movie rather than pick it apart. That'll be nice.

I've been looking forward to this since they picked the director.

I'm pretty sure Peter Jackson will give Del Toro a nice amount of leeway. Jackson doesn't seem like an egotist and he understands that with a director like Guillermo, designing the visuals is part of the joy of directing.

The director has also settled on where exactly the first film will end and the second will begin. “When you read the book, there is only one place to break it really,” he said. “And everybody knows it. It’s been discussed in forums and there’s a lot of people that are right. That’s where it’s going to break. So it’s very simple.

“What we’re doing is because we have the relationship between Bilbo and Thorin and all the dwarves, there is a logical place for that relationship,” del Toro continued. “There is a moment in the book where something is accomplished that allows us to say, ‘Okay, on to the next one after this.’”

They're actually going to split The Hobbit? That seems just plain nonsensical to me. I understood the second movie was supposed to act as a bridge between the two stories, ok, but The Hobbit starts with the beginning of Bilbo's journey, and it ends when he gets home. I don't see how you can break that up.

Ok, so if we want to break it based on some point in the relationship between Bilbo and the dwarves... it could be after they learn about the theft of the Arkenstone and cast him out. But that'd be a real downer, and the Battle of the Five Armies is just after.

I suppose you could break it at Laketown, but... wow. That'd kind of suck. "We promised you a dragon, but not till the next movie!"

I am guessing they break it with the eagles, but at least before entering Mirkwood. Depends how much extraneous Gandalf/White Council and Dol Guldur stuff they want to add, IMO.
