Pets and Games

Have animals ever made an impact on your games? Have you used your pets in your games, somehow?

Way back in 1E, I was running a game wherein a player was down to single-digit hit points against a vampire. He needed to roll at least an 18 to hit (everyone else had wisely run away). The tension at the table was thick as he rolled his d20.

Just then, my cat popped up and swatted his die. It bounced onto the PHB on the players' lap--and came up a natural 20! Everyone screamed, then screamed again as I reminded them that dice rolls only counted if they stopped on the table.

Okay, I let him have the natural 20, and the vampire took enough damage to scare it away. Thereafter he always had to pay the "cat tax" and pet my cat extra long whenever he came over.

Back in the 90s we would play Call of Cthulhu over at a friends house, in atmospheric conditions (low light, that sort of thing). The GM was excellent at building atmosphere and suspense, and once in a really tense scene where we were all on the edge of our seats the house cat decided to jump in the window! Naturally we all papped ourselves!
