PHB II Druid alternate wild shape

I think that, though the RAW doesn't state it, it would take a pretty petty DM not to let the Shapeshift stand in for Wild Shape at equivalent druid levels.

I was under the impression that the Shapeshift ability qualified you for any Wildshape PrC requirement...

Even if it isn't RAW, I would allow it without issue.

That should depend on how strong the PRC is and what it does. Any PRC that was competative in power with the PHB druid shares the same issues of being overpowered. Also, if the PRC used wildshapes to fuel PRC abilties, the shapeshift should not be used as equivalent since shapeshifting is an unlimted times per day abilty.

I think it should be a judgment call. Not allowing it cuts them out of all of the Druidish PrCs, which is a let down. But like Frankthedm said, some PrCs would be significantly powerful since Shapeshifting has no limit.

Tetsubo, I guess it doesn't count as official but I asked WotC Customer Service and they confirmed that Shapeshifting does not count as Wild Shape for magic weapons, feats or PrCs.

My DM and I worked up a variant Nature's Warrior that had Shapeshift as a prereq instead of Wildshape, and also changed up some of the ability choices to mesh better with the alternate ability. (And fixed some other issues he and I had with the class as written, actually.) I plan to start into it at 10th level ...

I'd love to see your adaptation.

I don't see a problem with allowing shapeshift to qualify for PrCs that require wildshape, obviously as long as they don't "use up" wild shapes per day to fuel their abilities.

I don't remember exactly what nature's warrior gets for abilities, so I don't know how wildshape/shapeshift interacts with the PrC.

Overall, I think the shapeshift ability is pretty great. The magic item drawback is only really a drawback if your DM allows you to cheese out magic items in your transformed form.... standard wildshape says your items are subsumed by the new form and rendered non-functional.... there's just some wacky DMs out there that let druids go willy nilly with braces and rings and amulets and cloaks and other crap... which is not the fault of the default wildshape rules, nor something that couldn't be applied to shapeshift.

Didn't they bring back a version of that magic Clasp from Masters of the Wild that lets you take advantage of magic items while Wildshaped? I think its in Magic Item Compendium.

That might be a good item to introduce to allows the shapeshift druid to use a few items.

EDIT: Its called the Wilding Clasp and its on page 190. It costs 4000 GP and is attached to any one one item. Prevents the item from melding into a a new form when you use wild shape, and thus remains fully functional.
