The way this feat is worded, does this feat allow you alter a spell's damage so that you can instead do ability damage or negative/positive energy damage with the spell?

Not at all. See the line on preparing the spell multiple times, which clarifies that you can choose a "different energy type" when preparing it.

Nope.

Spell says energy type. Negative/positive energy, vile damage, divine damage, ability damage and force damage are not energy types.

Fire, Electricity, Cold, Acid, Sonic. That's whatcha get.

Not when you are discussing game terms.
You don't think odd is the order of the day when discussing D&D game terms? O-kay. Thanks for putting a grin on my face today :D

More to the point, 3e has consistently used five energy types - acid, cold, electric, fire and sonic. That's what the feat refers to. Simple.

Not at all. When you try to use real world terminology and definitions to relate to in-game terms/rules, then it gets odd. It's like the whole [Evil] and "evil" debate. [Evil] is a specific game term with specific meaning. Evil (the english word used in the English language) has no bearing on [Evil] the game term, yet people seem to be trying to use real word definitions to define it. THAT is what I would call "odd". But I digress...

Well, I know that is what Energy Substitution refers to, because it is spelled out. Hence my question regarding Elven Spell Lore, which is less specific. There IS such a thing as Positive and Negative energy types in D&D you know. If you've been playing awhile, you'd realize that. Also, would force not be an energy type?

The whole "ability damage" thing was questionable, but since you did mention (which I must have overlooked) about the feat mentioning energy type, I don't think that's a problem any more. Unless there is an energy type that actually deals ability damage.
