Doing a search on USATODAY.com for Dungeons and Dragons, I got the following results:

4E Core Rulebook Giftset: weeks on chart-2, peak position 57

4E Dungeon Master's Guide: weeks on chart-1, peak position 128

4E Monster Manual: weeks on chart-1, peak position 143

4E Players Handbook: weeks on chart-4, peak position 48

PHB2 in its debut week was #28, beating out the original PHB.

Huzzah! Nerds unite... non-fiction... I s'pose, but it's definitely an odd-ball. If I was talking about Goliaths and Deva and Half-Orcs to someone I doubt they'd think it was non-fictional.

The PHB doesn't fit neatly into the traditional categories. It's certainly not a fictional narrative (it can be used to create fictional narratives, but is not itself one), which is probably what they used to classify it.

Excellent news! :)

As I posted in a similar thread, the fact that a "follow-up" book like PHB2 is doing so well, is a very good sign for the health of the brand and besides liking 4e well enough, I also think that the welfare of D&D is good for the hobby in general.
