Philip Marlowe and George Smiley Radio Dramas

Adventurer
I'm not big on books-on-disc. I've tried a couple, and they put me to sleep. I much prefer a different animal from the same family--the radio drama. This is where the creative team takes the books, and as faithful as possible, changes it ever so slightly so that it's a radio play, like the radio programs of the 40's.

Each character is voiced by a different actor. If there's a narrator, it's typically a character thinking in his own head. "He said" and "she said" are removed. You just her the character speak. And, there's sound effects. You'll hear the gun go off, the car door close, the wind through the trees.

There aren't many well done radio dramas out there, but I just stumbled upon a set masterfully done by the BBC's Radio 4: Raymond Chandler - The Collected Radio Dramas.

Chandler wrote 8 novles featuring hard boiled noir detective Philip Marlowe, and all 8 are collected in this set.

The Big Sleep
The Lady in the Lake
Farewell My Lovely

Playback
The Long Goodbye
The High Window

The Little Sister
Poodle Springs

Radio 4 also did a fantastic job on John le Carre's George Smiley spy novels. The Complete George Smiley Radio Dramas.

Call for the Dead
A Murder of Quality
The Spy Who Came In From the Cold

The Looking Glass War
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
The Honourable Schoolboy

Smileys People
The Secret Pilgrim

Again, these are top-notch, professional Radio Dramas. The best quality.

Having just finished all 7 of Chandler's original books (I have but have not read Poodle Springs), he is a fantastic, fabulous writer.
