Pick Pockets results

I've been wondering what other people do to determine how much money somebody gets from a successful pick pockets check. I'm talking about when the rogue gets into town and goes from tavern to tavern and through the market areas looking for an optimum target. I usually just make something up on the spot but I'm never sure if I give out too much/too little.

So, what do you do in your campaign?

if they attemt it on a normal person...i figure about a d20...if the person is rich of course it would be more, poor would be less...my campaign has very few towns though...

I'd use other skills, like gather information and appraise, along with spot or search to allow a player to pick a mark, and then give them treasure accordingly.

A single proffession (thief) check works just as well if not better, too.

Each NPC in my campaigns has a rank. The higher the rank, the more money thay have and it determines the base coin they recieve. People with character class use levels or rank (ie. Noble), whichever is higher.

Peasent (level 1-4) - 1d4 copper
Free Person (landowner) (level 5-8) - 1d8 silver
Middle Class (level 9-12) - 2d6 silver
Merchant (level 13-16) - 1d8 gold
Noble (level 17-20) - 2d8 gold

Then the amount the beat the DC by is how many coins they get, to the amount rolled for the NPC.

I run low-money though, but the system works. Just increase the amount or size of the die rolled.

Great ideas!

It seems so obvious to use other skills to find the mark but it never occured to me. A thief could use a Gather Information check to find out where the best part of town is to pick pockets or what guards are willing to look the other way etc. Then he could use spot checks to notice bulging pouches, a gem being slipped into a pocket, or he can use listen checks to hear what amounts of money are being exchanged. As far as DC's for these spot and listen checks, I will need to look into the skill descriptions to get an idea but it shouldn't be too difficult. I think I'll scale the DC of spot or listen check to how much money is changing hands. People with a lot of money tend to keep it a little more secret.

SylverFlame, it does look like you have less money in your campaign but I like the idea of at least setting up some kind of chart based on class or rank. I also like the idea of using how much you beat the DC determining how much money you get.

Thanks for the great ideas!
If anybody else has something different or is using something like the above but has more detail, please share it.
