Picking the square the invisible guy is in.

In 3.5, suppose an invisible elf is moving around in a room with a hostile orc. The orc wants to attack the elf. How does he determine which square the elf is in?

IIRC, it used to be a free listen check on the orc's turn to hear something, and if he beat the DC by 20, then he got the square too. Now in 3.5, all of that text is gone and elsewhere there is some stuff about using Spot to notice "visual clues". Neither place actually talks about determining a square though (it just mentions players "guessing"). And the Spot approach makes no sense when trying to do this in absolute darkness (or when you are blind).

So what's the deal?

One could always ready an attack as soon as he gets hit. That way, you'd almost definitely be able to pinpoint the square your opponent's in, unless he's using a reach weapon.

Just have an ork mage fireball the room :) work out what square he's in because his invisible clothes are on fire. It has the downside that you might kill a few of your own orks but that still seems quite an orky thing to do to me
