Pictoral ST:Nemesis MST3K

Well, I'm still quite fond of the show.

How do I deal with the recent idiocies? Easy - I pretend Star Trek ended with "All Good Things", the final episode of ST:TNG. DS9? Voyager? Movies? What?

It's the same way I deal with everything after the first season of Earth: Final Conflict. Isn't it tragic the way the show just ended on a cliffhanger like that? I always wondered what would have happened next... What?

I know what you mean. I've heard of some kind of Star Trek show that took place in a huge space hotel with Captain Jean-Luc Stubbing and Data the Magic Robot, but it sounds silly. I don't think Hollywood would ever greenlight something like that.
I mean, I've seen the Star Trek pilot, with Avery Brooks and Rene Auberjonois. I just don't understand who that Picard guy is supposed to be. And why didn't Paramount make any sequel to Deep Space 9? :D

How can anyone watch a recent ST movie and not be agog at how bad the action sequences are?

With all the technology that is intrinsic in the show, how can anyone just ignore it and write sequences that would be unbelievable on a weekly TV show?

Seriously - I'd like to hear from anybody who actually still considers themselves a ST fan.
How can you ignore the utterly horrific lapses of logic, science, and common sense?

Oh I'm still a fan but I've lowered my expectations significantly. For me ST pretty much ended after DS9.

Why didn't you think it was funny?

Also, it's the 10th movie--making it a solid even.

Forget the fact that it's an even movie. It's a 5th movie! And we all remember what a fiasco Star Trek V was. Do you realize that they eliminated the entire movie from canon? If that movie were canon then Voyager would have been home for supper. But I have to say that between Trek 5 and Trek X, I prefer Trek 5 because it still has the charm of the original cast, no characters die in stupid and contrived ways, and there were some neat little adventure scenes (not that it didn't have its share of stupid ones. Did anyone really want to see Uhura dancing around naked?)

Now if they could just eliminate Trek X from canon and make a good movie instead. As far as I'm concerned the Next Gen cast had a misfire where it comes to the movies. Generations was focused too much on the captains, First Contact was actually good, Insurrection wasn't as good as First Contact, but at least it featured the ensemble cast and there were some fun parts, and then Trek X was a total, total, utter awful train wreck.

In truth, I liked the first few seasons of DS9. The character development of Quark made the show worthwhile by itself, and I liked how it was much more of an ensemble.

But after the third or fourth season, the ideas went downhill, the quality of the scripts degraded, and the show became unwatchable.

It was rather like watching the death of Sliders, actually, except that Star Trek has enough fans to keep it going no matter how bad it gets.

Upon the completion of DS9, Behr made the comment that DS9 is what would happen if a series were cancelled but remained in production. I actually liked it once the dominion war got going, but there were too many elements of the show that I just found annoying, like Kai Wynn - bad role for a bad actress.

You might not like the role, but please check Louise Fletcher in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. I'm pretty sure she got an Academy Award for that one.

OK, my mistake. Maybe a bad role for a good actress.

I found the review to be right on. As for the films, I really enjoyed the Genesis Trilogy (II to IV), thought VI was okay and a good sendoff for the original cast, and like most people thought First Contact was fantastic. As for the others:

Star Trek: The Motion Picture left a lot to be desired, but also has its good points too. Hey, we got our Star Trek back! That alone was worth something.

Star Trek V was bad, but I'll recommend reading Shatner's "Captains Log" about the making of it, which illustrates how Paramont's accountants screwed it up as much as the writer/director/lead actor (the book also gives background on various scenes, which makes them more watchable as you look for things other than the weak story).

Star Trek: Generations also had a weak story, but also had enough new and interesting parts to it to keep you watching it. Okay, the scene on the holodeck sailing ship was silly, but didn't they look great in those uniforms! And that crash scene is riviting.

Star Trek: Insurrection actually holds up better on reviewing, and actually works much better on the smaller screen. As a movie it doesn't really measure up to movie standards, but it you take it as a long TNG television episode it's not that bad.

With Star Trek: Nemesis, however, there are no such excuses for. I still can't believe they cut out almost all of the wedding scene, filled with cameos from TNG that the fans would have loved, in order to fit in more scenes of Shizon talking to his Reman assiastant. I consider this to be the worst of all the films. I saw it the weekend it came out and told my friends not to bother. It's the only Trek film I haven't bought a home copy of.

You and me both, brother.

As for the Nemesis review: it was dead on. IMO, Nemesis and Enterprise are the hammer and nail in the coffin lid of the Star Trek franchise.

And to think I thought Star Trek: Insurrection was the worst a Trek movie could get. Luckily Nemesis came along to show me I was wrong.
