Pimp a *NEW* story hour: thoughts

Pimp a *NEW* story hour is a wonderful thing when it works.

However, it draws also the attention of how some writers whom put a LOT of work into their storyhours get no recognition.

It is in part why I rarely ever update anymore. No one seemed to care. I would have 20-30 hits per update but no commentary. It was that commentary I wanted and needed.

Just a thought. I'm sure some will read this and tell me I'm a jerk or at least overly insecure but hey- its how I see it.

Um, not to bitch, but why didn't you just post this in my thread?

I quick look shows that most of your story hours qualify for "new" status under the rules I set up.

I don't think you're being a jerk, but you seem to post the same comments every time someone posts a story hour thread. Personally, I don't know why you aren't getting the readership you want, I haven't read your story hours, and anyway, I'm not about to critique someone's writing style on a public board.

Actually, I thought you would approve of my thread, since it asks people to comment in the story hours they read.

I didn't want to take away from your thread. It can be very productive and possitive and I didn't want to troll it / ruin it with my thoughts.

Everytime these pimp threads come up I don't get recognition. I do often see the same names over and over again however. Though I noticed you put in the word "new" which is good.

sigh-
Lets face it.... I'm just envious and I'm not as good at writing especially now that I work 70+ hours a week. I don't have the time to do it. These threads just remind me of how much I enjoyed the writing but others seemed to think "eh" and would look at it but that is all.

I didn't just put in the word new, I also set down guidelines that all but forbid people to pimp the big story hours, mine included.

Look, I'm not gonna tell you to "just write for yourself," because honestly, I don't think any writer does that. We all want recognition and validation for our efforts; it's an incredibly egotisitical process. The only advice I can give you is simply to write as much as you can; it's the best way to get better. In addition, you are going to want honest criticism, something you can't really get on these boards (people are too nice). Find someone that you trust to be brutally honest, and have them evaluate your work. That can be a painful process - one I'm quite familiar with - but it is integral to your growth as a writer.

Some do, but it's certainly less common.

But if your primary goal is to get feedback from your writing, there are writing-dedicated sites that are nothing but about feedback. Heck, it's Nanowrimo: That site is a great place to start, even if you don't take a crack at writing a novella this month.

Fair enough. What I should have said was that no writer that posts his material in a public forum does so simply as a writing exercise.
