OTOH, it provides a decent real-time litmus test on people’s base level of courtesy. I’ve seen people leave carts- including motorized mobility carts- in handicapped spaces. And behind other shoppers’ cars. Hell- the last time I went to the grocery, I was walking out of the store with a cart of my own (and leading my Mom in her mobility cart) when the guy directly in front of me yanked his bags out of the cart he was using and just vector off at a 45deg angle towards his car. It was inconsiderate enough that he did it directly in my path, but he did so while his cart was in motion and right at the edge of the entrance ramp adjacent to the main parking lot roadway of traffic. I managed to run ahead of my cart and catch it before it got more than a couple feet into traffic while retaining overall control of my own fully-loaded cart as well. My Legion of Substitute Heroes/Mystery Men moment of the week. Besides, even if the carts are all corralled, someone has to bring them back to the store, because 99% of the customers aren’t grabbing them from anywhere else. So those employees’ jobs are still safe. And arguably, they themselves are safer, since they’d be spending less time out in the elements, dodging drivers.
