Re: the COVID pandemic One of the bright spots near me was a scenario that could have turned out very poorly. A few minutes drive north of me, a family opened a Burmese restaurant. Our family is pretty adventurous when it comes to trying different cuisines; it’s sort of a cheap & fun form of travel. We hadn’t ever had nor even SEEN a Burmese joint before, but one day, my Mom & I gave it a try. It’s one of the best new culinary experiences I’ve had in a decade. The menu is small, but I haven’t had a bad meal in there yet. The pandemic tie-in? They opened the restaurant in the 2nd week of Jan 2020. When we gave them a try, it was the last week of January, and they had only 16 reviews- all 4* or better- evenly split between native Burmese people and those (like us) who had never had it. The lockdowns nearly killed their fledgling restaurant. At one point I went in to get some takeout during the lockdown. It was about 3PM, and my $50 was their first sale of the day. As I was leaving, their second customer walked in. They were about 2 weeks from closing when things started turning around. Apparently, the online reviews & word of mouth recommendations reached a critical mass, and business picked up. The next time I was in there to dine in person (post-lockdown, of course), they told me that several people who knew me had come in and ALSO spread the word. So they were very thankful. They’re still in business today, and still putting out some great food.
