I don't know if I'd really consider it either. I think like you said, context matters. You could probably say it in a way that was either derogatory, or complimentary.. But in a general sense I think it's just way to describe an interest. Food is one of those things that everyone partakes in, but not everyone is passionate about. Like music. Everyone* likes music... But not everyone goes out of their way to seek out new music, or listens to music with a critical ear to experience it on a deeper level. Food is the same, everyone** likes food. They have foods they like, and foods they don't like. But they don't care about the intricacies of how it's made, maybe they don't care about the differences between meats cooked medium vs. well. I like sandwiches.. But Jim Behymer really likes sandwiches. I can appreciate bread.. I've made my own bread before and it was cool.. I can appreciate how much better it is than store bought.. But there's no way I can be bothered to go about making bread all the time. The juice isn't worth the squeeze for me. I'll settle for Kroger brand whole wheat. Probably default to neutral, leaning towards complimentary. See 1. I don't particularly consider myself a foodie.. I like food, and I could maybe be a budding foodie, but I'm far too lazy. I like making pasta sauce, and eating at nice dining establishments, but I'm not going to turn my nose up at jarred sauce or fast food after a long day of work. I guess just the context of the discussion. If someone was complaining about their roommate always trashing the kitchen the stinking up their shared living space, it might be meant derogatorily. Otherwise it's probably leaning more towards complimentary. *I do know one person who claims to not like music.. I kind of don't believe them. **I know some exceptions exist.. Otherwise products like Soylent/Huel probably wouldn't have a market.
