When my buddy and fellow Shadowrun GM Adam Keller passed away, I went over to his place to help his roommates sort through his stuff. He was a hoarder. There was stuff everywhere. In his bedroom, I'm moving piles of RPG books from the top of the shelf, and find a loaded shotgun under a pile of Knights of the Dinner Table comic books. It was pretty rusted, like it had been there a while without cleaning. The roommate I was helping was sorting through stuff on his desk and found an automatic pistol under a pile of character sheets. It was also rusted, and, significantly, had been put there cocked, like Adam was paranoid someone was going to break into his room and he'd need a firearms so fast the extra half-second would cost him. Here's the ting: HE HAD A GUN SAFE! It was probably 800-900 pounds, and in a closet, and had MORE GUNS IN IT. Dude must have had a dozen firearms. Which, if it's something you love, then absolutely, go nuts. But he died because he didn't want to be caught out with a huge medical bill because of the $5,000 deductible from his health insurance, so a sinus infection turned into pneumonia. Like, you need to prioritize things, and health is up there for a lot of people. Still, his dad was the absolute worst human being I've ever heard of (thankfully, never met him). I'm still mad the roommate didn't tell me when his dad loaded the gun safe and guns into his car and drove into New Jersey. I would have felt a warm and fuzzy in my gut for calling the police on that crappy human being. New Jersey has strict gun laws -- transporting a dozen firearms without a permit in your car is good for serious prison time and a hefty fine.
