Indeed. On one occasion I was going to lead a couple of ladyfriends on a ride, through some rural roads I knew they had never been on. One of these women had only been riding for about a year but I could already tell she had natural talent and I had suggested she go amateur racing. The other had years of experience. Some of my favourite roads, that I pretty much kept to myself. As they were in farm country there were a fair number of straight roads, that I connected via a series of twisties to have some fun. Three other people heard about it, from them, and just added themselves. Two I knew and were fine, but it still annoyed me. The third I had never even heard of. I've never liked riding in a group with unknown quantities. It can be dangerous. It turned out this guy loved straight-line speed. That's the opposite of me. For me, the fun is in the corners. Straight lines just connect those and are meant for taking in scenery. They're also where cops ticket you. At the end of the ride he complained about not going fast enough. During the ride we hit what was a set of 5 corners that I could ride in my sleep, at track speeds. Five corners. When I finished riding them I had to pull over and wait for 30 seconds, before he came into sight. He started out right behind me. I'm not fast. I have no natural talent. It was all hard won by training.
